Safer Internet Day 2012 is calling on families to discover the digital world together.

February 7 is the ninth Safer Internet Day and this year has the theme of Connecting Generations. It highlights the benefits of sharing internet safety know-how at home.

In the UK new research reveals children appreciate their parents’ guidance in how to navigate the online world. Three quarters of 9-16 year olds (73%) feel they benefit from talking to their parents about their internet use. Contrary to popular perceptions that parents are the in dark, two-thirds (68%) of children say their parents always know what they are doing online.

Also, parents who talk to their children about the internet can help to protect against potential online risks, according to the research.

And according to the new research young people help their older relatives too to stay safe, helping them with privacy settings and to set up security settings to protect against viruses and spyware on the family computer.
